How to Prepare Your Body for Breast Surgery

When it comes to breast surgery—whether it’s reconstruction, augmentation, reduction, or other breast procedures—many patients ask what they can do ahead of time to set themselves up for the best possible recovery.

Taking time to prepare your body before surgery can help support healing and make the recovery process smoother. Here are three areas I often recommend focusing on, based on what I’m prioritizing in my own upcoming surgery preparation.

Cardio for overall health and recovery

Good cardiovascular health plays an important role in how your body handles surgery and heals afterward. Increasing your cardio endurance can improve circulation, oxygen delivery, and energy levels, all of which support recovery.

“I’ve been spending more time running, hiking, and doing the cardio I love, knowing I won’t be able to for a while after surgery,” Dr. Peled shares. “It’s also just a great way to keep my mind clear.”

Whether it’s walking, cycling, or another activity you enjoy, building your cardio fitness helps your body be better prepared.

Flexibility and mobility to ease tightness later

Breast surgery often affects how the chest, shoulders, and back move and feel. Working on flexibility before surgery can help reduce tightness and maintain a healthier range of motion.

“I’ve been doing more yoga and active stretching to really help with my mobility and flexibility,” says Dr. Peled. “It’s something I know will definitely help once I start recovering.”

Even gentle daily stretching can make a difference in how your body adjusts post-surgery.

Strength training, especially for core and upper body support

A strong foundation can make recovery easier, particularly when you’re limited in using your arms.

“I’m focusing on my chest, arms, and especially my core. After breast surgery, you use your core so much to sit up and move around without pushing or pulling with your arms.”

Exercises like Pilates are especially helpful because they combine core strength and flexibility. Building strength now means relying on those muscles later will feel more natural.

Preparing your body before breast surgery pays off

Putting in a little extra time ahead of surgery can have real benefits—helping you recover more comfortably and get back to the activities you love sooner.
